프랑스 보르도몽테뉴대학교 교수 부부의 상생스테이

  보르도몽테뉴대학교 명예교수 베르나데트 리갈-셀라드(Bernadette Regal-Cellard)와 프랑스어 교사 출신의 남편 장 셀라드(Jean Cellard)는 2025년 10월 24일부터 30일까지 여주본부도장을 방문해 상생스테이에 참여했다. 셀라드 부부는 대진대학교에서 열린 제4회 세계상생포럼 참가를 계기로 대순사상을 더욱 깊이 있게 이해하고자 여주본부도장에서 체험과 연구를 진행했다.
  4박 5일간 진행된 상생스테이는 한복 체험, 영대 배례 및 대순성전 참배, 기도 체험을 비롯해 차량 고사 참관, 교무부 연구위원 및 수도인과의 대화, 상제님 생가터 및 금산사 답사 등 다양한 일정으로 구성되었다.
  베르나데트 교수는 이번 체험이 “대순진리회를 더욱 가까이 이해할 수 있었던 매우 소중한 시간”이었다고 밝히며 다음과 같은 후기를 보내왔다.

  저는 2017년 제1회 세계상생포럼 때 여주본부도장을 처음 방문했습니다. 당시 동료들과 함께 한복 입는 법과 절하는 법을 배웠고, 영대에 가서 인사를 드릴 기회를 얻었습니다. 성스러운 공간의 명상적 분위기는 매우 인상적이었습니다. 다만, 그때는 대순진리회를 막 공부하기 시작한 시기라 제가 경험한 신비로운 요소들을 모두 이해할 수는 없었습니다.
  2020~2021년에는 ‘대순진리회에서 신의 강세’를 주제로 논문을 작성하면서 대순사상에 대해 더 깊이 파악하게 되었습니다. 그러나 여전히 영대에 관한 설명과 세부적 교리를 듣고 싶었고, 마음속에는 해결되지 않은 질문들이 남아 있었습니다. 이후 제2회, 제3회 상생포럼을 통해 여주본부도장을 두 번 더 방문했지만, 일정상 영대 참배를 하지 못했고 연구를 이어갈 충분한 시간을 확보하지는 못했습니다.
  그래서 올해는 대순진리회 수도인분들과 더 많은 대화를 나눌 기회를 얻고자 상생스테이를 신청했습니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 종교 사원 중 하나인 여주본부도장에서 더 오래 머물고 싶었기 때문입니다. 대순사상학술원에서는 상생포럼을 준비하면서 저와 남편을 위해 상생스테이를 제안했고, 교무부 국제팀에서 모든 일정을 세심하게 준비해 주었습니다. 그 덕분에 저희는 4일 동안 수도인들과 함께 시간을 보내며 종교적 대화뿐 아니라 인간적인 교류도 나눌 수 있었습니다. 국제팀은 매일 학자들을 비롯한 여러 수도인과 만남을 준비해 주었고, 특히 교리적 문제에 대해 매번 계획한 시간보다 더 길게 토론할 수 있어 매우 만족스러웠습니다.

  첫날 우리는 청소년수련원 숙소에 짐을 풀었습니다. 그날 오후 5시, 차량 고사 의례가 있다고 하여 매우 기대가 되었습니다. 이 의식에 대해 대순진리회 뉴스레터에서 읽은 적이 있었고, 매우 독창적이라고 느꼈기 때문입니다. 가톨릭에서도 사제가 자동차나 집을 축복하는 일이 있지만 대순진리회의 의례만큼 정교한 절차를 갖추지는 않습니다. 특히 땅에서 생산된 제물을 올리는 모습은 종교적이면서도 문화적으로 깊은 인상을 남겼습니다. 저는 이 고사 의례를 참관하고 기록했으며, 앞으로 진행할 논문에 포함할 계획입니다.
  가장 인상 깊었던 순간은 10월 28일 화요일의 도장 참배였습니다. 국제팀이 준비해 준 아름다운 한복을 입고 영대에 올라가 인사를 드렸습니다. 이 경험을 통해 영대의 의미와 신성한 힘을 더욱 깊이 이해할 수 있었습니다. 비록 저는 다리가 불편하여 배례를 온전히 다 수행하지는 못했지만, 저는 경건한 의례의 일부가 되었다는 강렬한 감동이 있었습니다. 남편은 배례를 온전히 수행했고, 저와 같은 감동을 경험했다고 말했습니다.
  오후에는 교무부 연구위원들과 인터뷰 및 질의응답 시간을 가졌고, 저녁에는 도장 인근 잠실 방면 포덕소에서 기도 의례에 참여했습니다. 10여 명의 수도인과 함께한 기도는 매우 인상적이었고, 기도 주문을 낭송하며 상제님께 올리는 경건한 분위기 속에서 저와 남편은 완전히 하나가 된 듯한 느낌을 받았습니다.
  29일 수요일에는 상제님 생가를 방문하는 긴 일정을 떠났습니다. 배규한 대순사상학술원 원장이 상생포럼 기조연설에서 최근 동향을 설명하며 생가터를 언급했기에 더욱 의미 있는 답사였습니다. 이어 상제님께서 강세 전에 머물렀다는 불상이 있는 사찰 방문을 요청했고, 인솔자들은 우리를 금산사로 안내해 주었습니다. 역사적 현장에 직접 서 있으면서 종교에 대한 인식이 크게 변화하는 것을 느꼈습니다.
  동학 관련 지역을 방문할 수 있었던 것도 매우 의미 있었습니다. 한국사 연구에서 동학은 중요한 전환점이지만, 제가 그 출발지에 대해 명확히 알지는 못했습니다. 가는 길에 영주산 선인봉을 오랫동안 바라보는 시간을 가졌는데, 장선렬 교감의 선인포전혈에 대한 설명을 들으면서 그 강력한 기운에 감탄했습니다.

  마지막 날 오전, 수도인과의 대화 시간에는 대순진리회 수도인의 삶과 마음가짐을 이해하는 뜻깊은 경험이 되었습니다. 이후 다시 교무부원들과 교리 토론을 하며 많은 도움을 얻을 수 있었습니다. 매일 저녁에는 주소연 박사와 차익제 보정이 제가 작성한 연구 노트를 검토해 주고, 참여하지 못한 의례에 대해서도 자세히 설명해 주었습니다. 두 분의 조언은 언제나 소중했습니다.
  지난 4일간 식사마다 부서장들과 팀원들이 함께해 주었고, 맛있는 한식을 먹으며 끈끈한 우정을 쌓을 수 있었습니다.
  10월 31일 금요일, 친구들이 인천공항까지 배웅해 주었고, 남편과 저는 여러분과 헤어지는 것이 매우 아쉬웠습니다. 머무르는 동안 우리를 돌보아 준 차익제, 김관수, 김가영, 주소연 등 ‘대순진리회의 수호천사(프랑스식 표현을 빌리자면)’들께 깊은 감사를 드립니다.

  I first visited Yeoju Headquarters temple in 2017 during the First Sangsaeng Forum. First my colleagues and I had been taught how to wear the Hanbok and how to bow. We had been fortunate to be allowed to go into Yeongdae Shrine. I had been very impressed by the meditative atmosphere of the sanctuary. Yet, since I was just beginning to learn about Daesoon Jinrihoe religion, I had not grasped all the mystical subtleties of what I was discovering. 
  They became clearer to me when in 2020~2021 I worked on a long article on Divine Incarnation in Daesoon Jinrihoe. But now, I still had many questions that remained unanswered since I wanted to understand many details in the shrine and many doctrines. Later, I again visited the headquarter temple grounds twice but we had not entered the shrine because the timetable for the members of the Second and Third Sangsaeng Forums did not leave time for further exploration.
  This is why, this year, I felt I should ask to spend more time with Daesoon Jinrihoe members and on the grounds of the Headquarter Temple, which, as I have already remarked publicly, is one of my favorite religious sites on earth. As the DAOS teams were preparing for the forum, they also organized the Sangsaeng Stay for myself, and also for my husband who could come for the first time. We thus spent four days with our friends at Daesoon. This has really been extremely interesting, religiously speaking and humanly speaking. The team had planned a very rich schedule that allowed me to exchange several times every day with members of Daesoon and in particular with scholars. It was so enriching that instead of just spending one-hour discussing theological matters (as it was planned), we spent over two hours doing so each time.

  The first day of the Sangsaeng Stay, as we were getting ready to settle in our beautiful apartment at the Youth Center. I was told that a car blessing ritual was beginning at 5 pm in the garage division. Was I interested? Of course, I was, since I had already read about this ritual in your newsletter and I had found it quite original. I knew some Catholic priests will bless cars or houses etc., but it is never with the same complex ritual. It is very religious and cultural at the same time, with all the offerings from the earth.  Afterwards I took down notes and I plan to include this ritual, considered as minor, in one article.
  The most impressive ritual took place on Tuesday October 28: it was going back to Yeongdae Shrine with now a much better knowledge of its meaning and power. Even though I could not perform the full bowing (with the head to the ground), I felt I was part of an intense and secluded worship and I felt very moved. So did my husband who himself could accomplish all the bowings.
The day continued with interviews, questions and answers sessions. In the evening we participated in the prayer ritual, Jamsil Podeokso, in a nearby community hall. This prayer performed by some 10 people was very moving and my husband and I felt totally integrated in the prayer group, in the chanting, and in the reverence to Sangje-nim.
  On Wednesday 29, we were offered a long trip to see the birth place of Sangje-nim. Since in his key note address at the Forum, Chairman Bae had presented the recent developments realized there by the Province and by Daesoon Jinrihoe, it was perfectly timely to visit the site. I asked if we could visit the temple nearby, in the Buddha statue of which Sangje-nim had resided before being incarnated. Our friends took us there and this was another impressive moment.  Being able to see and stand in those historical sites changes radically the perception one can have of your religion.
  I was also very pleased to visit the Donghak area. In my study of Korean history, this period struck me as particularly epoch making, but I did not know the area where it had started exactly. We also spent a lot of time admiring the powerful hills of Yeongjusan mountain, listening to Jang Seon-ryeol’s explanation about Seonin-pojeon energy of geomancy.

  The last day was again very helpful with several interviews and theological discussions. Each evening, Soyeon Joo and Jay Cha helped me with the notes I had taken during each day and offered long explanations of rituals I could not attend. Their advice was always precious.
  Over these four days, each meal was the opportunity to spend time with several directors and their team. All this definitely framed our stay within strong friendship ties around delicious Korean food.
  On Friday 31st, our friends drove us all the way to Incheon Airport and I must say that my husband and I were rather sad to be leaving them and all of you. My husband and I wish to extend all our thanks to our guardian angels (as we say in France) Jay Cha, Kim Gwansu, Kim Gayeong, and Soyeon and many others during the stay.
